CNN —A Pennsylvania district attorney intends to appeal a judge’s decision last month to overturn the murder convictions of the so-called “Chester Trio” – three men who have spent nearly 25 years in prison for a crime they say they did not commit. In late March – over the objections of prosecutors who fought to have the convictions upheld – Delaware County Judge Mary Alice Brennan vacated the trio’s convictions and granted their request for a new trial. On Tuesday, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said he had, in fact, decided to appeal. Attorneys for at least two of the men said the district attorney’s announcement was disappointing. “There could be nothing further than justice than the decision to appeal the judge’s order,” said Vanessa Potkin of the Innocence Project, who represents Johnson.

When two Native American boys from Nebraska died after being taken to a notorious boarding school hundreds of miles away in Pennsylvania, they were buried there without notice. After it opened in 1879 in an old Army barracks, thousands of Native American children were sent by train and stagecoach to Carlisle. In 1990, Congress passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American Cabinet secretary, has pushed the government to reckon with its role in Native American boarding schools. REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Samuel Garcia, one of the two main opposition hopefuls competing in Mexico's 2024 presidential election, has withdrawn from the contest to return to his post as governor of the northern state of Nuevo Leon, his party said on Saturday. "I have decided to not participate in the electoral race for President of the Republic," the 35-year-old Garcia said in a statement from the Nuevo Leon government made public by his center-left Citizens' Movement (MC) party. Garcia then became embroiled in a dispute about who would replace him in Nuevo Leon, where his political opponents control the state legislature, which votes in the interim governor. Recent opinion polls have given Garcia around 10% support in the presidential race, putting him behind Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the main opposition alliance.

The latest Parametria poll gave a third contender, Samuel Garcia of the opposition center-left Citizens' Movement (MC), 10% backing. "That said, it's a big lead and we're looking at a scenario where she would have an absolute majority (in Congress)," Abundis told Reuters. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The race to become Mexico's next president has closed slightly, but former Mexico City mayor and ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum still has double the support of her main opposition rival, an opinion poll showed on Monday. Samuel Garcia, who is competing for the candidacy of another center-left party, Citizens Movement (MC), polled 8% support. A poll published in early October had given Sheinbaum 50% support versus 20% for Galvez, although that survey included a fourth, right-wing candidate who did not feature this time. "With the entry of Samuel Garcia as sole MC contender, the presidential ballot has been practically set in stone," Buendia & Marquez head Jorge Buendia wrote in El Universal. Separately, an analysis of several polls by research firm Consulta Mitofsky which stripped out undecided voters and those not backing any candidate showed Sheinbaum with 62.7% of effective support.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

A view shows the urban area of the municipality of Santa Catarina near the land where Tesla has indicated it could build a new gigafactory, in Santa Catarina, on the outskirts of Monterrey, Mexico February 28, 2023. Tesla announced the planned factory in the northern Mexican state in March, without providing a timeline for construction. After a fraught process for Tesla to confirm its Mexico plans, investors are closely watching the automaker's next steps in the country. Santa Catarina's Mayor, Jesus Nava, said local officials were beginning to improve infrastructure in the area where Tesla is set to build the factory. Musk on Wednesday said the company was "laying the groundwork to begin construction" in Mexico but did not yet have more definite plans.

The planned investments include $700 million from Ningbo Tuopu Group (601689.SS) and $260 million from Hesai Technology , a Nuevo Leon representative said. Ningbo Tuopu Group develops shock absorption products and other auto parts, while Hesai Technology makes lidar light sensors for applications like autonomous vehicles and robots. Ningbo is expected to create some 10,000 jobs, and Hesai, up to 4,000, Nuevo Leon officials said. Tesla (TSLA.O) in March announced plans to open a major plant in Nuevo Leon, its first in Mexico, which has also attracted EV investments from other automakers seeking to meet ambitious production targets. CNN —New images from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed surprising pairs of planet-like objects in the Orion Nebula that have never been detected before. The Orion Nebula, a glowing cloud of dust and gas, is one of the brightest nebulae in the night sky and identifiable as the sword in the Orion constellation. But no existing theories explain how the JuMBOs formed, or why they’re present in the Orion Nebula, McCaughrean said. This Webb image shows the full survey of the inner Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster, captured in long wavelengths of light. Meanwhile, other research focused on different star-forming regions could reveal whether JuMBOs are elsewhere beyond the Orion Nebula.

You may have heard that wearing bright colors may provoke shark attacks. Curiously, the tale goes, every man taken to his watery grave had one thing in common — they were all wearing orange pilot suits. This is a popular story in shark communities and is likely the origin of the myth that shark attacks may be caused by wearing bright colors, like yellow or orange. Sharks can't see color very wellThough Gruber's 1977 work confirmed sharks have sharp vision, it stopped short of drawing conclusions about color. Yellow and orange are the best colors to wear if you end up in a dangerous situation and want to be spotted by rescuers.

"The culture wars are coming to UK businesses, including the financial sector," said Andre Spicer, dean of City University's Bayes Business School. It also cited "risk factors including... controversial public statements which were felt to conflict with the bank's purpose". However, data from watchdog the Financial Ombudsman Service showed complaints about account closures represented a tiny fraction of a bank's overall customer base. Experts say other banks will now be scrambling to ensure their own policies and committees are behaving appropriately, to avoid further scandals. The CEO of Britain's biggest domestic bank Lloyds said on Wednesday the bank's own policies did not include looking at customers' political or personal beliefs.

On the torrid afternoon of July 6, 1948, Hubert Humphrey departed one kind of inferno to plunge into another. He was bound for Philadelphia, site of the impending Democratic National Convention, where the sweltering weather provided the fitting backdrop to a heated convention. The Democratic convention of 1948 promised to be morose and volatile all at once. The glum mood reflected the failure of liberal insurgents in the party, Humphrey included, to oust the incumbent president, Harry Truman, from the ticket. His speech at the Philadelphia convention, imploring delegates to “get out of the shadow of states’ rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights,” convinced a decisive majority of the delegates.

INTO THE BRIGHT SUNSHINE: Young Hubert Humphrey and the Fight for Civil Rights, by Samuel G. FreedmanMinneapolis may be the city most notorious for anti-Black police violence in the world. Out of the top 100 largest metropolitan areas, Minneapolis ranks 99th in the gap between Black and white earnings. In June, the Department of Justice cited this statistic in its investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department. From routine instances of excessive (and sometimes deadly) uses of force to everyday racist taunts, the Police Department disproportionately abused Blacks and Native Americans with little to no accountability. Reflecting on these patterns, the U.S. attorney general, Merrick Garland, said, “They made what happened to George Floyd possible.”And yet, eight decades ago, as the journalist Samuel G. Freedman writes in his riveting new biography, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” the Minneapolis mayor and future presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey made some progress in dismantling prejudice in the city’s Police Department.

A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.
